Course Overview

This course introduces participants to the principles, strategies and practical approaches for strengthening community participation, grassroots advocacy and locally led social change. Sustainable development and meaningful social transformation are more likely to succeed when communities are actively involved in identifying their priorities, shaping decisions, mobilising resources and advocating for issues that affect their lives. Effective community advocacy therefore requires more than mobilisation; it requires an understanding of local power dynamics, relationships, inclusion, communication and collective action. The programme provides a practical framework for community assessment, stakeholder and power mapping, grassroots leadership, participatory decision-making, community mobilisation, advocacy campaign development, coalition building and social-change communication. Participants will explore approaches for building trust, strengthening community ownership and creating meaningful opportunities for women, young people, vulnerable groups and other marginalised populations to participate in development and advocacy processes. Particular attention is given to grassroots leadership, community organising, advocacy networks, coalition development, campaign planning, stakeholder engagement and sustainable community-led initiatives. Participants will also examine how evidence, communication and strategic partnerships can strengthen community voices and increase their influence on policies, programmes and institutional decisions.
